Remaining Active and Safe
As a primary caregiver, you are responsible for your loved one’s health and safety around the clock. However, you do not necessarily need to be with them 24 hours a day. By making only a few adjustments, you can enjoy the peace of mind that comes with knowing that the person you care for is active and safe in his or her home.
- The first step is to consult a physician who can help you to identify current debilities, ailments or areas of concern.
- Then have a physical or occupational therapist perform a Home Safety Evaluation to provide recommendations for a safe, low-risk living environment.
- Once environmental changes have been identified and made, start a regular exercise program under a physician’s supervision. Daily exercise and activity can help your loved one to maintain strength and balance, reducing the risk of falls.
Additional environmental and lifestyle changes also ensure a safe home setting. It’s always important to have an emergency plan which can alert the offsite caregiver to a fall or other medical emergency. Installation of a Personal Response System (PRS) allows your loved one to remain active and safe in a low risk environment with the added security of knowing emergency assistance is easily accessible.
